TO LOSE, TO COPE
(c) JEL, 5 May 2000

(Obi-Wan)

I lost you to another's heartless touch,
I never thought that it could hurt so much
To see you slip away from me,
To lose the hope to ever be

A little more than your best friend -
How final this, the bitter end.
My heart was yours to simply take,
But barriers of a moral code did break

My chance of telling you how dear
You were to me, how infinitely near
My soul has been attached to yours.
I smiled at you, talked blithely, did my chores

And never gave you cause to think
That all my happiness lay in a merry wink
Of yours, meant just for me, hidden from others;
The knowledge what you gave me smothers

All the grief I wish that I could feel,
For never was your touch more real
Than when you passed, slipped from my grasp
And with you I let drop my lonely mask

And wordlessly screamed out all my love for you
Into the darkness; I believe you knew
Then, in the moment that you left me, died,
How dearly loved you were, how deep and wide

My true affection for you ran;
Those memories of friendship I will never ban -
If nothing else, I had your loyal honesty
And I know well that you did care for me.
